Creating Away From Aberystwyth

After a week and a half back in Preston for personal reasons I was itching to get back to Aberystwyth and get stuck back into my studies. I considered calling this blog ‘The Infamous COVID-19’ but I’m sure you are all like me and are sick of reading about it now. During these strange and bizarre times, it is important for us to take a break from all the tension and anxiety being created by the news. So, take a break and read about my own, personal problems surrounding art, instead.

Whilst I was back in Preston, I wish I could say I was able to create prolifically but that is far from the truth. However, I’m going to focus on what I DID do, even if that isn’t much, I went to see Louise Giovanelli’s exhibition at the Manchester Art Gallery. It was truly inspiring, and I have since then become enchanted with her paintings, the transparent ghost like layers, the delicate and thoughtful application of the paint as well as the garish neon background colours. I plan on looking into her process as an artist and what inspires her work; I bought the catalogue of the exhibition and it has an interview with her in there which I plan on reading in the next coming weeks. Other than this, I only really briefly looked at my process and where I want to take my project in the next coming weeks.

Talking of the next coming weeks, I am currently on my way back home, the university has closed, and all lessons are being delivered digitally from now on until September. Which has proven very strange when on a practical course such as Fine Art, but the show must go on. When I get back home, I will be moving into my mum’s old studio space where I will continue my studies from home. I suppose the perks of being quarantined means I have no excuse but to use my time wisely and focus all my energy into my art practice.

So, where to start when I’m all settled into my space back home…

1) Reflect- I plan to lay all my paintings out, my sketchbooks my notes and reflect. Reflect on what I’ve created, why I’ve created as well as how I’ve created.

2) Thumbnails- Draw up some thumbnails, responses to the surveys I created a few weeks back now.

3) Colour Studies- Create some small colour swatches and studies based on my thumbnails and collective thoughts and ideas to each survey.

4) Paint- Just paint, try not to get too caught up in the fact that it’s been a week and a half without painting. Don’t get too stressed about needing more work for my deadline. Just create.

That is my action plan, my survival plan during these times. I will keep you updated on how I get on with this. In the meantime, keep yourself safe and for god’s sake, stay inside!
